I guess it depends on how you define “job.” John from Pedestal called me today and confirmed that he would need a bassist for some fill in gigs as their guy is moving to Texas. We had talked previously, and I told him up front that I wasn’t sure how commited I could be. I know how serious John and Jen are and didn’t want them thinking I could be 100% about a band if I’m not up to it. So I’m gonna do some gigs for them and we’ll see how it goes. Pedestal is among the handful of higher profile local bands that I really like. There’s some good bands around here, but being a good band actually hustling the way John does is another story. His band is doing well because he works the gigs. Original bands don’t typically do well around here for one major reason: they’re lazy. The clubs needs some sort of proof you can put asses in seats. You won’t have the draw that a cover band will, so you have to do something to get those seats filled. As long as the clubs sell beer thats all they care about around here. So, Pedetsal does well because John works the shows and promotes the hell out of himself. Even if I thought his band was total shit, I’d still play with him because he’s a straight shooter and a really cool guy. Fortunately, I don’t think his band is shit at all.
John says he’s paying me for my time as a hired gun, which is nice. Still not a real job. I’ve heard nothing from the Governor’s School, don’t expect much from them now. I have confidence things will work out, but I’m really starting to get scared. Man, you could copy and paste this post and put it on Drew’s page and no one would be able to tell the difference!!
