Unexpected Guest

I received a phone call yesterday from my old friend William Butterfield who told me was in town. Actually, he was in Charlotesville visiting his brother at UVA, but as far as I knew, Will was in Phoenix, AZ, so thats pretty local by comparison. Apparently, Will went to New Jersey to buy a car and visit his sister and then drove down here to Virginia. I guess he’s planning on driving himself back to Phoenix, which I must admit I envy.

Will is among my oldest and strangest friends. We met on the bus in middle school over a discussion about the Robotech “space-fold” theory. (No really.) Now he is an independent filmmaker, who isn’t currently making any films, but is working on becoming an EMT right now to pay the bills (yeah, we’ve heard something like that before). Will is probably one of the most brilliant people I know, as well as one of the least able to get on track with his life, but I know he is capable of just about anything he sets himself to do. We definitely have this problem in common, it’s not the tasks that are difficult for us, it’s everything leading up to starting the tasks. Thats another blog in itself.

At any rate, Will is one of my old pals and it’s nice surprise having him in town during my birthday week.

Five Things I Won’t Get For My Birthday

My tastes are expensive. I don’t expect my friends or family to buy me the gifts any more (another reason I know I’m getting old). Here’s a list of things I don’t expect anyone in my life to consider buying for me.

  1. Apple 1.67GHz MacBook Pro - I need a new computer and I didn’t expect to be as excited about these new Intel-based Macs as it turns out I am. The upside of not being able to afford one right now is that Apple will work out all of the kinks and kick in a few extra features by the time I finally have the dough.
  2. Aguilar DB750 Bass Amp - I’ve been having amp issues for awhile. I played through some of the older Aguilar gear at the Sadowsky shop in New York. Unbelievable. These are the most amazing amplifiers ever.
  3. Bergantino NV610 6×10 Speaker Cabinet - If I am going to upgrade my amp, I may as well add sixty more inches of speaker to my existing thirty-five and drop down to 2 oHms. Blow up any stage.
  4. Another Sadowsky Bass - I’ve talked before about how much I love my Sadowsky bass (in 2007 I will have been wielding it exclusively for ten years), and I really, really, really want another one. This time around, something fretless, maybe in mahogany.
  5. Treo 650 - Joe’s Treo has been the envy of my geeky soul since he and Drew bought them last year. Imagine, check your email before you even get out of bed. Man, thats a dream come true, but, I can’t justify (or afford) the extra monthly payment for the service, right now. Someday.

So what am I getting? Well, another (hopefully more lucrative) education, for one. I have parents who haven’t kicked me out of the house yet and a girl who has basically been supporting my sorry ass for the last six months that I’ve been out of work. She also bought me a Bally’s Total Fitness Membership, and that rules.

I don’t have too much to complain about.

You Know You’re Getting Old, Part 3

All I Wanted Was A Pepsi.

No explanation needed, I’m sure.
