  • Maybe you should explain the meaning of the lyrics, Justin. That way people will know exactly how utterly ridiculous that really is.

  • You should go ahead post them in both languages for us, Kim.

  • you should put in parentheses on posts like this that there is a video on the post. from the rss fead it looks like you just had ‘y’all are messed up’ and that was it. kim’s second comment made me open it up in my browser…

  • good call. i never use rss to read my own site.

  • Wow…I watched that whole video. Don’t ask me why.

  • Since Kim hasn’t posted it.. one of the main lyrics is “ang ganda ko, feel na feel long hair ko” which means “i am so pretty, feel my long hair!:

it’s no “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”

  • Wow. The accompanying gestures make slightly more sense now.

  • hey that’s a mtv for a Rejoice shampoo here in the PHilippines. Or is it for the D’Lucky Ones Movie? Anyway, the main singer (who also stars in the comedy spoof D’ Lucky Ones) is Sandara Park, a Korean-cum-local-celebrity living in Manila. There’s another mtv similar to that.

  • It is the ‘D Lucky Ones’ video, Jules. It comes on TFC here in the states every five minutes and we all start dancing and singing along like a bunch of idiots. Incidentally, I learn a new word of tagalog every time I act like an idiot while watching TFC with my friends.

Let me ask you a question, Jules. You called the video an ‘mtv’. Is that part of the Filipino tendency to use a single brand name to describe all of a given product? (like, all toothpaste being called ‘colgate’, refridgerators are called ‘frigidaire’, hats are stetson, etc.)

If so, I think thats hilarious and awesome. Here in the states, MTV barely plays any videos anymore.

  • justin, i stand corrected. it’s indeed sandara park’s video for the film, D’ Lucky Ones. You should watch it tho– hehehe (very politically incorrect film) Try finding her other two videos: one about a Rejoice jingle (where she flings her hair left and right the entire time) and her first idiotic vid “In or Out”

i guess branding things are a cultural thing– we take it for granted here and we refer to them unconsciously. i guess if there’s no Tagalog term for a consumer product, then we take the most popular brand as the generic term for it. Or if there’s a tagalog term, we still stick to the brand cuz it’s easier to pronounce. some of them are: detergent=tide, softdrinks=coke, pencil=mongol, or some grilled streetfoods: chicken feet=adidas, pig ears=walkman, skewered chicken intestines=IUD, cubed pork blood=betamax (don’t worry i don’t dare eat these stuff, just the IUD tho)

  • psst justin, do you watch the gameshow Wowowee on the TFC?

  • Wowowee is my life, Jules. If I knew of a way I could effectively work a ‘naman’ into that sentence, I would. Unfortunately, my “taglish” is worse than my Tagalog. But seriosuly, I wish American game shows had more desperately poor people on them. Here it’s doctor’s and lawyers and businessmen winning a $100,000 at a time and not being the slightest bit excited about it.

Kim and I really want to go on Wowowee when we go to the Philippines (maybe next year) and donate some money.

  • justin, that’s great. it would be fun to go on Wowowee just watch out for the stampede tho, but if you really really want to help out poor folks when you come over here, get in touch with tony meloto of Gawad Kalinga. it’s like habitat for humanity kinda stuff. very hands-on like they let you help build houses for the poor.

    http://www.gawadkalinga.org/howtohelp.htm

  • I see they also accept music and art teachers. That’s pretty cool!

I am passing that link around, as well.

  • justin, just a thought, by going to these inane tv shows will indeed be a unique cultural experience (just like an elephant show in Thailand)…

    oh, don’t forget Eat Bulaga… they’re funny also…
