We might be opening for Yngwie Malmsteen at the Roper Theater in early May.
Don’t make any jokes, we want this gig.
I am not a fan persay, but I enjoy the ridiculous over-the-top nature of his performance and his stoopid-fast guitar playing. When it’s all said and done, guys are guys and we like stuff that’s fast and loud and no matter how sophisticated or professional of a musician you think you might be.. when you see a genuinely fast and loud guitar player live, you freak the hell out. Don’t pretend that you don’t. I might make like I don’t care that much about technical music and, for the most part, I’m not so into it (especially Fusion) but opening for Malmsteen would be fun. I admit it. I think it would be pretty badass.
Jay is, of course, excited as hell because he’s from that generation of nasty 80’s guitar players (actually, he’s from a little bit before that generation, don’t tell him I said that).
We are waiting for Yngwie himself to listen to Jay’s CD before we are confirmed to play the show, which I think his hilarious because it made me remember those old Guitar World Magazine articles where he trashed every player on the planet (including Vai and Satriani). I don’t know how serious he was about it back then, but I think a lot of it was part of his image. I have friends from Berklee who studied with Joe “Professer Shred” Stump (who many consider to be a Malmsteen clone) and Joe had been slagged pretty hard by Yngwie in one of those articles but, as I understand, he was cool to Joe when they met in person. Who cares, though, really? I thought those articles were funny. He sold a lot of magazines, and probably a few of his own CDs because of them.
I am, however, glad that I’m not on Jay’s CD. haha.

Justin, this gig sounds like it would be a hell of a lot of fun. Good luck in getting it. I myself am not familiar with Malmsteen’s music, anytime you have an opportunity to hang out with excellent musicians, you should take it. Hope it all works out!
EEENGVAAAY!
any gig is a cool one, methinks. who cares who it is with. congrats on it!
Oh, wow, good luck. I’ve never been at all a fan of Malmstein’s but I had friends who were way back in the day. It would kick ass to say that you got to open for him.
This isn’t an April Fool’s joke, is it?
I am surprised no one asked me that sooner. But no, it isn’t.
Once again, though, I know everyone hates advertisements, but this article has yielded some entertaining results from Google Adsense
