Is it me or do musician-related internet forums really, really suck? What a bunch of whiny jerks. People complain about Linux geeks alot and how snotty they can be, but I guarantee you that SOMEONE in an open source forum WILL help you. Musician forums seem to be primarily made up of 16 year old kids who want to download (bad) tabs, armchair quarterback musicians who are “in search of that perfect vintage tone that sounds perfect in my living room because I have never played out in my life” and the classic stuck-up Berklee jerks who shit on everything anyone ever says about a musician that didn’t play with Zappa, Mahavishnu, or Dream Theater.
I refuse to participate in these stupid forums, so I am going to ask my question here and maybe some of the bassists that cruise by my site will be able to answer it:
Has anyone tried using an active boost-only 2-band preamp (like an Aguilar OBP-1) with Bartolini single coil (9SU) Jazz Bass pickups? I’m concerned the noise might be a little much and preamps traditionally increase the noise in single coil pickups, but I as have single coils and a preamp in my Sadowsky (all Sadowsky-brand stuff) and the noise isn’t bad, I’d like to know if anyone had experience with this using other pickup and preamp configurations (not necessarily Bartolinis but perhaps another single coil)

This is Drew (Alex’s brother). I agree with you whole-heartedly about musicians online…they’re the same little wankers you see in Guitar Center or Daddy’s Junky Music (local music store chain in New England).
That being said, Zappa and Dream Theater DO RULE…..but I am certainly not a snob about it…I like the Hives, too, for Chrissake!
Does anyone ever buy anything at Daddy’s? I know the shop on Mass Ave is a real piece of work.. I don’t think I ever bought more than a cable there the whole time I lived in Boston.
Oh yeah, I forgot you went to Berklee so you knew about Daddy’s. It *used* to be a pretty cool store, I’m talking 10+ years ago. Alex and I actually got a lot of great gear for some pretty good prices there back in the day. But lately it caters to either low-end junk or people who have no clue what they want or can’t even play. I still go there occasionally to try stuff out or see what’s there for used gear (same with Guitar Center) but I usually end up purchasing what I like online.
I remember hearing about a kid stealing a Fender Deluxe guitar amp from one of the ensemble rooms (which is stupid to begin with, because they were/are garbage and he must have unbolted it from the wood plank they are mounted to). Anyway, this kid tried to resell it to the Daddy’s across the street. Not out of town, but the one right across the street from Berklee. There’s a hold on used gear when you trade stuff in (I think it’s MA state law?), and during that time they check it against reported stolen gear. Which it was. The dumbass kid even used his real name.
Wow…….
I’m speechless.
