A few days ago some protesters conducted a very creative display of their first amendment rights against the Blackwater security firm in Moyock, NC. Some were dressed and made up as corpses laying about a bloodied car covered with fake bullet holes outside of the Blackwater compound. I originally found the photos on Mosquito Blog but I googled it some more and found some other images on The Virginian Pilot.
I didn’t think people protested anything in this part of the country. I can’t say that I watch the news on TV very often, but I doubt this was talked about very much. The local news in Hampton Roads prefers stories about how hard it is for Navy wives to be home by themselves and people eat too much junk food. Occasionally they work in a Portsmouth or Newport News shooting or how some bus driver dropped a kid off at the wrong bus stop.
Well actually there’s alot more going on in Hampton Roads than the Virginian Pilot will ever know. Did you realize that the Tidewater Peace Alliance groups have brought a great group of speakers and documentaries into town among them Amy Goodman of Democracynow, the folks from Camp Casey, and Jeremy Scahill. They will be bringing in a whole bunch of folks in December for the 3rd annual light into darkness peace festival which opens with the fair trade festival and includes a peace film festival.
And yes we do lots of interesting demonstration sorts of things too.
The Boot is hosting a fundraiser for the Fair Trade Festival in November…bringing in a DC band called Scythian. Star Womanspirit should be there just before 9ish (if thngs go as planned) Shes also with mosquito blog….check with her if you want to get hooked up with the hampton roads indy media people or the Tidewater Peace Alliance folks.
