Regardless of What Happens Today

This will be the first election, and possibly the only presidential election in which Kim and I, along with our parents, could prospectively sit down at the same table and say that we’d be voting for the same person.. and not even because we felt we were voting for the lesser of two evils.

History may indeed be made today, but in a lot of households it already has been made. That is something to admire and consider. Regardless of what you may think of the political system in this country and regardless of who wins this election, the fact that so many Americans are turning out to the polls is a sign that we still have that spark of comraderie and indignation that, as often as it can divide us, binds us together as Americans.

For the moment at least, the cynicism and complacency is put aside and the democratic process is something we are putting our faith in to determine the direction of our country. There are many, many things that I don’t like about our country, but one of the things I do like is that I can say so, and I can participate in the way my government works. It may not always work for my interests. It may seldom work for my interests, but I don’t remember a time when I was more proud to be an American.
