Two Cities Seperated By A Bunch of Whining

Dear Virginia Beach,

Stop acting like Norfolk is so fucking far away. You jerks drive to Greenbriar all of the time. It’s not like the Oceanfront and Kempsville are right next to each other either. Get over yourselves, come to Norfolk, I’ll buy you a coffee at Elliotts and we can drive through the bad neighborhood that the Clipse pretended to be from in that video. Here look, it’s not that bad:

My God, I can’t even count how many times I’ve had this discussion. I, myself, live in Virginia Beach and I don’t understand what the fucking deal is. People act like driving to Norfolk is like driving to fucking Canada. And let’s face it, parking in Norfolk is way easier than parking at the damn oceanfront. For those of you who don’t know how to drive on the interstate…just learn how to do it already or surrender your drivers license. You’re never gonna get anywhere anyway.

    Funny but true.

I remember when I was going to school (which is in Virginia Beach, but 1/2 mile from Norfolk border) one of my classmates found out I lived in Norfolk and was really curious about how long it took me to get to school, like it was something that took me hours. I had a 10-15 minute drive. Come to find out, he lived in Dam Neck and it took him that long just to get to the interstate, which he then had another 7 or 8 miles to go from there. It took forever to go to his house from the school.

Another time someone on the local UNIX user’s group was complaining about the meetings being in Norfolk. Dude lived in Pembroke - closer to the place than I was (living in OV at time).

The stories can go on and on. Me? Downtown is far. Oceanfront is far. I never go to Chesapeake.

I can understand it a little when there are cities with tunnels involved, but only during traffic hours. But we lived in OV for how long and how often did we go to Hampton? We were always more likely to drive to the ocean front (the long way: via Ocean View Ave to Shore Drive) then we were to go over that bridge.

Ocean View people are different though, I think. They seem to either never drive anywhere or they are so used to driving miles out of their way to stay in Norfolk that it’s second nature. It never seemed like we lived in the boondocks while we were living there, but now I just can’t justify moving back to OV (no matter how cheap the rent is).
